I will be chairing an event that will stream live here today at The Washington Note with Pakistan Ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani — a good friend well known in Washington, Boston and New York circles — and Ghost Wars Pulitzer Prize winning author Steve Coll who is also my boss at the New America Foundation.
The event, titled “Pakistan: Toward Democracy and Stability — A Conversation on Pakistan’s Turbulent Political Environment,” will stream from 12:15 pm EST til 1:45 pm EST.
And it will also run LIVE on C-Span 2.

    George “Democracy Promotion” Bush hypocritically clung to the tyrant until the very last. More proof–in case anyone needed any–that Bush and the neocons’ “democracy promotion” efforts are nothing more than noble rhetoric, useful for villifying their enemies but inapplicable to those who have sworn fealty to the emperor.
    “Musharraf gutted the rule of law in Pakistan over the previous year and a half, including sacking its Supreme Court. He attempted to do away with press freedom, failed to provide security for campaigning politicians and strove to postpone elections indefinitely.
    The Bush administration has made a regular practice of undermining democracy in places where local politics don’t play out to its liking, and in that, at least, Musharraf was a true partner.”
