Obama’s Brain

My friend and former New America Foundation colleague Karen Kornbluh, who was principal author of the Democratic Party Platform and who has served as Policy Director in Senator Barack Obama’s Senate office, just had a great profile/Q&A appear on CNN.
Karen is a great thinker, out of the box, and Obama’s team (the ones who play it safe) would be wise to learn from her and her big ideas approach to life.
On other fronts, I’m at Washington Dulles Airport about to fly to Munich, and then Erfurt, Germany. Next week I’m in Madrid and Barcelona. I was supposed to be in Rome with friends Michael Lind, Ivo Daalder, and G. John Ikenberry for a big U.S. foreign policy conference there — but there are just not enough days.
More when I land.

I am pleased you are calling attention to Ms. Kornbluh and I agree with all that you have said. I think the heading is quite disrespectful, however. We probably got too used to the idea of someone being someone else’s brain when the phrase was used in the contest of President Bush, as he was commonly thought not to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. But Pres.-elect Obama is the smartest person involved in his campaign and presidency and it is hoped that the others involved in his campaign, including Ms. Kornbluh, would be learning from the master and carrying out his ideas and not the other way around. Nobody elected anybody in the executive branch except the President and the VP, and only them. The rest are just the hired help.

Steve — thanks for the posting on Karen. I too am a fan of hers and I’ve been concerned that her name has not come up in all the talk of the Obama Administration. It would be a shame if she doesn’t continue in some capacity in the White House.

I think Americans are really wanting for a change. Therefore, they have supported the best one presidential candidate. What they think is the ability of the possible to be country leader. Have you heard about Barack Obama’s “Blueprint for Change?” I think an employee of the federal government will be wondering how the 44th President’s policies may affect them. According to Lois Romano and Eric Pianin of the Washington Post, there are “dozens” of proposals amid Obama’s Blueprint that could change the career path of scores of workers from among America’s 1.8 million federal employees. He plans to look at everything line by line to discover and cut waste. “I am not a Democrat who believes that we can or should defend every government program just because it’s there,” says the President Elect. While that may sound scary for some and send others running for personal loans, keep in mind that Obama does have a very broad domestic agenda that could move skilled employees from threatened divisions into new programs formed because of his idealist civic policies. Plus, Obama plans to encourage young public servants who share his sense of idealism to get involved in restoring faith in the American dream through service. Click to read more on Personal Loans
