Karzai, Iran, the US, and Bags of Cash

Tonight, I discussed the revelations that Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and his team were receiving “bags of cash” from Iran and what the implications of this were with Jim Lehrer on the PBS NewsHour.
The other guest was National Defense University Professor and former Afghanistan Interior Minister Ali Jalali.
Here is a good resource page with both the video clip and a transcript, which I will also post later.

Then, obviously, we need a “War On Barbecues”. I’m sure Congress will fund it if we market it as a “War On Cooked Pork”, targeting those nasty “anti-kosherists”.

Barbecues can kill you. The charcoal-like black crust on hormone-infested mad-cow-diseased meat is carcinigeous and money back ain’t gonna help you.

  3. JohnH says:

At least Iran doesn’t have to borrow its Karzai bribes from China or from the Social Security Trust Fund…
Funny how, when others do what we do, it suddenly becomes reprehensible!

I agree with Ali Jalali. The Karzai-bashing is not helpful, and I don’t see the point of it.
The only ray of hope in Afghanistan, after nine years of resisted US military occupation, is the peace talks that Karzai has initiated.
The US is doing nothing in this regard. All the Obama campaign blather about Smart Diplomacy notwithstanding, the US has all its eggs in the Petraeus war basket, as far as we know.
There is no solution now visible that doesn’t include Karzai, so why bash him? If it’s the money, the Defense and State Departments are wasting many billions than Karzai is, so why not bash them instead?
