DC Sizzle: Jennifer Holliday Shouts it Out!

A few days before the DC Gay Pride Festival, gay community do-gooder and HIV awareness activist Dan O’Neill who had medical board exams scheduled in 13 days was asked if he would dance backup on stage with the original Dreamgirl, Jennifer Holliday, along with some other DC Gay Men’s Chorus Dancers, some of whom used to be part of the DC Cowboys.
Jennifer Holliday & Steve Clemons.jpgHmmmm……Board exams? or JENNIFER HOLLIDAY? Choice was easy — and he’s the one in the purple shirt in the extravaganza above dancing to Holliday’s new “Shout it Out.”
I’m the least culturally literate person in Washington — but the Dreamgirls and Jennifer Holliday are big touch points for me.
Holliday was magnificent on and off stage, so gracious to everyone after her high sizzle performance.
And Happy Pride to those on the edge of coming out and letting your identity rip. As Jennifer Holliday says, “Shout it out!”

Another note from my return to the world of public education: a student who apparently was upset over his brother’s possible gayness did the research and is now a proponent for understanding that it is something one is or isn’t, not some kind of superficial “choice.” Every single individual enlightening is one more step along the road the society must ultimately choose to travel if it is to live up to what it should be as what LBJ envisioned as a great society.

I really loved Jennifer’s performances and what she had to say. I bought the track on itunes to give some love back. The song is listed under Tony Moran on the Sugarhouse Crew “Mix Magic Music” album and is called “Magic (feat. Jennifer Holliday)”.

Thanks for posting, Steve! It was a wonderful performance by Jennifer. After all these years, she’s still got that amazing, powerful voice. Her personal story is one that should inspire others to personal greatness. Thanks for sharing the experience with me! (And yes, Dan is very special. I’m extremely lucky to share my life with someone so talented that also gives back to the community every chance he gets!)
