Conservatives are asking What Would Reagan Do on the Law of the Sea. Personally, I don’t care all that much and would defer to the unanimous judgment of today’s national security, business, and environmental leadership. But some conservatives do care. The answer to WWRD? Ratify. It’s not even close.

Mark Goldberg and I had a funny conversation this morning about Ollie North’s rant on the Law of the Sea over at Human Events. I won’t be responding to every ridiculous opposing argument (that would take up far too much time), just the ones that strike the funny bone with special force.
The lesson that some people are taking away from the Iraq boondoggle is that values-driven foreign policy should be rejected. Since prominent neoconservatives plotted a course according to values and not interests, they say, we need to get back to pursuing interests.
I’ve had something of a one-track mind these past few months, as regular readers of this blog might have noticed. The Law of the Sea has been the subject of at least half of my recent posts and an even greater percentage of my advocacy focus.
It turns out that John Bolton’s recent lobbying against the Law of the Sea represents a major flip-flop.
Some of the leading opponents of the Law of the Sea, ironically, feel very strongly that we should trust the judgments of military personnel on military matters. Jim Inhofe: “I don’t think it’s too much to expect for our leaders in Washington to keep an open mind and get the facts before drawing their conclusions….
I’ve just learned that John Bolton is meeting with conservative senators, urging them to oppose the Law of the Sea. A Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on the convention is scheduled for Thursday.
I’m hoping Sameer will be able to confirm or deny this, but my guess is that President Bush’s speech to the UN General Assembly this morning was met by a chorus of yawns.
