Picture of Confidence

General Xu Robert Gates.jpg
Pictures often say a lot — but this one even more.
China’s growing confidence is clear in this shot of General Xu Caihou, who serves as the second-highest ranking officer in China’s military.
General Xu visited the US Pacific Command at Ft. Smith in Hawaii after meetings with Defense Secretary Robert Gates (pictured above) and President Obama.
The photo ran in the PLA Daily on the 29th of October.

    A boy names “Xu”.
    Looks like a tough sonofabitch.

Okay, I’m never sure. Is his first name Xu, or is that his family name?
I never know if people switch it in a western context or not. I am assuming his given name is Caihou.

Maybe the Chinese general was expecting a salute. After all, top American officials, including former prez Bush, salute the US military. And Obama even marches in step with them (see the Dover AFB video.)
    Civilian control of the military?
