The opening statements by Senators Richard Lugar and Joseph Biden are underway regarding John Bolton’s nomination to serve as America’s Ambassador to the United Nations.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Lugar said that any nominee to this position and his or her statements should abide by these three things:
1. Is the statement true?
2. Is the statement consistent with the policy positions of the President of the United States and Secretary of State?
3. Is there a rational expectation that the statement furthers American objectives and interests?
Senator Biden made the obvious point in his statement that John Bolton’s career proliferates with examples where these criteria did not govern his public pronouncements.
