Why Not Richard Haass as U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.?

No one will accuse Richard Haass of being a softy on the United Nations. He is a Republican and has all the right credentials for this job.
Currently the President of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York (he wouldn’t have to move!), Haass also served as the Director of Policy Planning in the State Department and is a tough-minded realist and grand strategist.
He understands what the United Nations needs to look like and how it must function to be an effective partner to American interests and help promote long-term global stability.
