For those of you in the Washington area, I am chairing a book event and public policy discussion with two-time Pulitzer winner and Washington Post Pentagon correspondent Tom Ricks, whose new book, Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq is hitting the book stores today.
Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, long-time aide to Colin Powell and former Chief of Staff at the Department of State, will offer comments on Rick’s presentation.
The meeting is open to the public — as long as you RSVP in advance. It will take place Friday, 28 July, 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm. Books will be available. It’s a brownbag meeting, so feel free to bring your lunch — but also note that the meeting will be packed.
RSVP to Elizabeth Wu at wu@newamerica.net — and say that TWN sent you. The site of the meeting will be the conference room of the New America Foundation at 1630 Connecticut Avenue, NW, 7th Floor, Washington D.C.
More later.

    U.N. Official Says Hezbollah `cowardly`
LARNACA, Cyprus, July 25 (UPI) — A U.N. official in Cyprus says Hezbollah is being ‘cowardly’ if it is proud more Lebanese civilians are dying than fighters in Israeli airstrikes.
Jan Egeland, the U.N. undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, accused Hezbollah of ‘cowardly blending’ among civilians, Israel`s Arutz Sheva news service reports.
‘I heard they were proud because they lost very few fighters and that it was the civilians bearing the brunt of this,’ India`s Zee News quoted him as saying. ‘I don`t think anyone should be proud of having many more children and women dead than armed men.’
He called such a practice a violation of humanitarian law, Zee News said.
AND HERES THE ARTICLE DAVUD/BRIAN TOLD US WAS A “VERBATIM” DUPLICATE……
U.N. exec blames Hezbollah for deaths By LAUREN FRAYER, Associated Press Writer
Mon Jul 24, 6:22 PM ET
BEIRUT, Lebanon – The U.N. humanitarian chief accused Hezbollah on Monday of “cowardly blending” in among Lebanese civilians and causing the deaths of hundreds during two weeks of cross-border violence with Israel.
The militant group has built bunkers and tunnels near the Israeli border to shelter weapons and fighters, and its members easily blend in among civilians.
Jan Egeland spoke to reporters at Larnaca airport in Cyprus late Monday after visiting Lebanon to coordinate an international aid effort. On Sunday, he toured the rubble of Beirut’s southern suburbs, a once-teeming Shiite district where Hezbollah had its headquarters.
During that visit, he condemned the killing and wounding of civilians by both sides and called Israel’s offensive “disproportionate” and “a violation of international humanitarian law.”
On Monday, he had strong words for Hezbollah, which crossed into Israel, captured two soldiers and killed eight others on July 12, triggering fierce fighting.
“Consistently, from the Hezbollah heartland, my message was that Hezbollah must stop this cowardly blending … among women and children,” he said. “I heard they were proud because they lost very few fighters and that it was the civilians bearing the brunt of this. I don’t think anyone should be proud of having many more children and women dead than armed men.”
“We need a cessation of hostilities because this is a war where civilians are paying the price,” said Egeland, who was heading to Israel next.
At least 600,000 Lebanese have fled their homes, according to the World Health Organization. One estimate by Lebanon’s finance minister putting the number at 750,000, nearly 20 percent of the population.
During his visit to Lebanon earlier Monday, Egeland issued an emergency appeal for $150 million to help Lebanon through the next three months. He told reporters in Beirut the money was needed to pay for food, health care, water and sanitation.
“Approximately 500,000 to 800,000 people have been affected by the conflict, of whom some have become displaced persons or refugees,” a U.N. statement said.
The United Nations has contracted 100 trucks to deliver aid coming into Beirut around the country. Egeland said the U.N. hoped to send its first land convoy to Tyre on Wednesday. Similar convoys will be scheduled every second day after that. An international Red Cross convoy was expected in the city Monday.
Egeland said he was asking Israel for safe passage for aid ships to enter the northern port of Tripoli and the southern port of Tyre, which has been heavily bombarded. So far, Israel has loosened its sea blockade of Lebanon only to let ships in Beirut port.
“We’re hopeful that in the course of this week, you’ll see real progress on the ground. Lebanon has a right to be frustrated,” he said.
He said the U.N. was also asking Israel to also guarantee safe passage throughout Lebanon.
Hundreds of thousands of refugees have flowed out of mainly Shiite regions — the south, the Bekaa and the crowded Shiite neighborhood of Beirut — crowding into cities including the southern port of Sidon, the remainder of Beirut and parts of the north and central mountains.
“We are particularly worried about the population in south Lebanon and the (eastern) Bekaa Valley. It’s here that they’re in the crossfire and from where they’re being displaced,” Egeland said.
Continued Israeli bombardment makes the aid mission risky.
“Only cessation of hostilities can make it safe for us and our humanitarian colleagues,” Egeland said.

RIYADH, July 25 (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah said on Tuesday Israel’s military offensives on Lebanon and the Palestinians could ignite a war in the region, state media said. “If the peace option fails because of Israeli arrogance, there will be no other option but war,” Saudi state television quoted the king as saying in an official statement.
The channel also said Saudi Arabia had pledged $500 million to rebuild Lebanon and $250 million for the Palestinians. ”
I wonder how the Saudis will handle it if there is an all out war… which side, if any, they would be on….could they continue to maintain their neither here nor there posture?
All they have to do to win an Arab war against the US is cut off our oil.
Wonder what Bush’s buddy Prince Bandar is having to say to Georgie about all this.

It will be interesting to see how Bush perverts the reality of the event in order to continue to support Israel. Koffi Annan is livid, not that it will make a difference.
I am beginning to think we are in the Twilight Zone. Watching Bush this morning, with his rosey presentation of the situation in Iraq, was surreal. Surely, by now, 90% of the American people must KNOW this hapless buffoon is lying his ass off.
It is a real shame that people like Wilkerson did not find their voice, their patriotism, and their balls early on when it could have made a difference. Bush has so completely fucked up our world image that we may well NEVER get it back. And his transparently false efforts to send aid and money into Lebanon is laughable at best. The sack of shit sends bombs on an expedited basis, then slobbers some crap about aiding the Lebanese. He’s an embarrassment, and the whole planet loathes the son of a bitch, except Israel, of course.
Every one of these bastards that served on Bush’s staff at a cabinet level is culpable in this ever expanding clusterfuck. And that includes Powell’s staff members, such as Wilkerson, who did the bidding of their masters to the detriment of all Americans, and are now seeking atonement by self serving retrospection neatly packaged in profit producing paperbacks. Both Wilkerason and Powell SURELY must have first hand knowledge of indictable acts of perjury before Congress, committed by any number of Bush’s lackeys that have testified before Congress about Iraq and the lead up to war. But one must assume that ALL the higher echelon Bush staffers are aware of and complicit in the lies and deceptions that are the trademark of this Administration. No one will come forward because THEY ALL are guilty of hatching this mess.
When I hear the lock snap secure on Bush and Cheney’s cell, on the heels of sworn testimony by the likes of Wilkerson and his ilk, ONLY THEN will I accept the sincerity of their regrets.

One thing I’d like to hear Wilkerson address is the 2006 elections. Does he see any change in U.S. foreign policy if Democrats gain one of the chambers of Congress? If so, will Wilkerson support Democrats, why or why not? If not, what needs to happen to lead to productive change?
I’m generally biased toward the Dems having somewhat of a positive effect and would like a Republican such as Wilkerson state specifically, from a foreign policy standpoint, why Republicans should maintain control of Congress given their propensity to roll over for Bush on most matters. All the talk from Wilkerson about the Cheney cabal is meaningless unless he states how it can be changed with a Republican congress. Otherwise, what’s the point of him speaking up while continuing to support the status quo?
