Peter Bergen on Pakistan/Afghanistan Border: US Camp Fired On

-

Bergen&binLaden.GIF
My colleague in the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation and CNN’s terrorism analyst Peter Bergen is broadcasting live intermittently today on CNN from the Afghanistan/Pakistan border from a U.S. base camp there.
I just received word an hour ago from Peter that the camp is under fire — most likely from Taliban/al Qaeda forces. He has learned much and has much to say on the current state of play with al Qaeda, bin Laden, the Taliban, and Afghanistan’s and Pakistan’s political stability.
He will be broadcasting live tonight 10 pm – midnight ET on CNN, live from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Just wanted to give an alert.

More evidence of a massive amount of free time.
Instead of wondering about what poa is up to next week and plotting another stupid post, why do you not wonder about the fact that in direct response to the 9/11 attacks Bush with your support inadvertently fathered a burgeoning fundamentalist republic which has long standing ties to Iran, a so called `axis of evil’?

Well, alec, you can bet I won’t be bullshitting this blog about what it is I really do, or inventing quotes and trying to pass them off as truth. Or using ad hominem attacks to whine about people using ad hominem attacks. Or sniveling to Steve via email.
Have fun in the “Congo”. alec. Tell me, is it still an E-ticket ride? Be sure to sit on the left side of the boat, the Hippo sprays the right side.

your flatulent posts do not move the conversations forward at all.
all you do is insipidly describe people as opposed to analyze the faults in their posts.
do you not have anything better to do with you time?
what are you un-employed, retired, bored?
why do you not get your lazy ass and your kool-aid soaked brain to Iraq and do some good?
The two most powerful parties in Iraq (the Al Dawa and the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution of Iraq) are in need of more infidel canon fodder after having already gulped down ocean after ocean of US blood and treasure.

This elder abusive language was pointed out.
The same writer then insulted others, while “inquiring” about what is insulting.
    That, too, was verbal abuse.
Was the writer’s purpose to bully and to berate?
Pattern: Unable to con the forum, the writer tries to pick fights to gain attention, while offering nothing of substance.

A multitude of people, far more involved than these 4 housewifes, have been blowing the whistle on this charade even BEFORE 9/11. Sibel Edmonds was sounding alarms and asking questions from the get go, as were many others. You have obviously not been keeping abreast of this issue, a fact that precludes you from having the ability to discern “conspiracy theories” as they apply to 9/11. The most fanastic “conspiracy theory” of all is the official line of crap we have been fed about 9/11. Like I said, I am more than willing to debate the issue with you, but I would appreciate it if you would not ABET the criminal cover-up by drooling this scripted response of “conspiracy theory”, just because it is easier to mouth those words, than it is to accept that there are unresolved questions that implicate our government in a cover-up.

Bush: Bloodthirsty Executioner of Texas and UBL’s Protector?
As Governor of Texas, Bush executed 131 prisoners without hesitation.
Bush said “I’m confident that every person that has been put to death in Texas under my watch has been guilty of the crime charged, and has had full access to the courts.”
When Karla Faye Tucker appealed for clemency since she had become a born-again Christian, Bush responded as follows “Please,” Bush whimpered, his lips pursed in mock desperation, “please, don’t kill me.”
Given Bush’s record of ordering killings, it is truly strange why this same sense of bringing killers to justice does not apply to UBL who orchestrated nearly murders.

As Gov of TX, Bush executed numerous low scale murderers.
As POTUS, Bush is not concerned with the mass scale murderer UBL who killed nearly 3000 people on 9/11.
    Why is this?

POA, fellow Californian, take a breath — jump in the truck, get yourself a nice slush from Sonic — and look this one over for just a sec. You do have agreement on some key points here, well worth remembering!
KarenK (obviously a caring human being in the medical field) has acknowledged that “anyone who questions our current Administration on…actions and responses… surrounding the events of 9/11 has her full and complete support. That’s part of what freedom is all about. Questioning the government. They are OUR employees, we must continually remind them of this.”
She has indicated to you — as have others, at times — that some of your language is offensive to her. She is not from Mars, so think for a moment — she is a fellow contributor to this community. Now what do you know about nurses? Nurses speak life-promoting words to people in crisis. A nurse may be the last person to see you on this earth. Their words have power — to heal, to help, to comfort, and their eyes witness daily the value of human life. For my part, I conclude that Karen has to be professionally aware of the power of words, especially in medical situations. Certain words are inappropriate at certain times. She deals with those times every single day.
She does not have the answers to all the 9-11 questions — and she is not required to, in order to participate here. She supports those asking the questions, and fully.
So, you, POA, champion of fairness, can play nice with people who play nicely, like Karen. K?

You say I “attacked you” by telling you to get your head out of your ass. Well, I disagree, it was actually a helpful and caring suggestion. I am sure you will feel much better if you follow my advice, for it can’t possibly be comfortable having your head in such a confined space. Or, of course, you can continue to demean and patronize me, and others, by continuing to drone on about “conspiracy theorist” every time someone raises questions about the official version of the events surrounding 9/11. Your transparent inability to debunk, or even address, the very real and relevant questions that surround the events of 9/11 supercede any justification you have for labeling me a “conspiracy theorist”.
The bottom line? The official story about 9/11 is pure fiction in many respects, and it doesn’t take a genius to reach that conclusion. So if you want to DEBATE the veracity of the official story, bring it on. But if all you have to offer in rebuttal is this bullshit of reciting “conspiracy theorist” every time someone questions the official version, then I consider THAT a personal AFFRONT, no less offensive than me telling you to pull your head out of your ass.
Try it, it might free up a few of your brain cells, and you will be able to tell us why Sibel Edmonds was silenced. Or why Willie Rodriquez was pulling burn victims out of the basement. Or how Atta’s passport became the Eighth Wonder of the World. Or why Mahmud Ahmed was not pursued, and his role was hidden. Or why the hijackers that were misidentified are still listed as participants. Need more, or is that enough for now?
But until you are willing to address ANY or ALL of those questions, keep your condescending and insulting comnments about “conspiracy theories” to yourself, will you? All you are doing is abetting the lies, coverups, ineptitudes, and deceptions of this administration when you cast those kinds of uninformed aspersions.

Elder abuse has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Abuse of the elderly can occur in public. Perpetrators of elderly abuse may be professional caregivers; relatives; spouses; partners; doctors; lawyers; bankers; accountants; or strangers.
Emotional abuse of the elderly can range from a simple verbal insult to an extreme form of verbal punishment. The following are examples of emotional abuse of the elderly:
    • habitual scapegoating or blaming
    • harassment, name-calling, cursing,
    humiliating, insulting, or ridiculing
    • intimidating
    • treating an elder like an infant

You don’t seem satisfied with the transcript of bin Laden’s speech on al Jazeera as an admission of guilt because he didn’t say “I did it.” in those exact words.
Since I’m in a devious mood today, let’s do a hypothetical situation:
Say, POA gets punched in the face and everyone wants to know who did it and why.
    I post:
“Let me tell you the reasons behind why POA got punched in the face.
The idea to punch POA first came to me because of his use of foul language, his personal attacks on people who disagree with him, and his need to comment incessantly on Steve’s blog instead of getting his own.
The decision to punch him came when he attacked me directly just because I don’t believe someone other than Al Qaeda attacked us on 9/11.
If he continues the action will have to be repeated.”
Hypothetically, it would be quite safe to infer that it was I who punched him, even though I never said “I did it” in those exact words. Wouldn’t it?

The actual nature of the Steve’s post was to >>alert<< people of Peter Bergen’s broadcasting.
It was not specifically about the contents of Peter Bergen’s broadcasting.
You make it sound like Steve was actually providing a summary or transcript.
How exactly are we suppose to discuss and respond to Peter Bergen’s broadcasting while we are simply being alerted to that very same broadcasting?
All I asked for was a `unequivocal statement from either UBL or Al-Zawahiri’ in which credit/responsibility is taken for the 9/11 attacks.
I questioned how this HUGE gap in the historical record can exist?
So, is it safe to posit UBL never claimed responsibility for the 9/11 attacks?

Some very competent arguments that should be refuted in any discussion of what actually happened:
    http://www.911truth.org/article.php?story=20041221155307646
A statement asking for further inquiry:
We Want Real Answers About 9/11
On August 31, 2004, Zogby International, the official North American political polling agency for Reuters, released a poll that found nearly half (49.3%) of New York City residents and 41% of those in New York state believe US leaders had foreknowledge of impending 9/11 attacks and “consciously failed” to act. Of the New York City residents, 66% called for a new probe of unanswered questions by Congress or the New York Attorney General.
In connection with this news, we have assembled 100 notable Americans and 40 family members of those who died to sign this 9/11 Statement, which calls for immediate public attention to unanswered questions that suggest that people within the current administration may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war.
We want truthful answers to questions such as:
    1. Why were standard operating procedures for dealing with hijacked airliners not followed that day?
    2. Why were the extensive missile batteries and air defenses reportedly deployed around the Pentagon not activated during the attack?
    3. Why did the Secret Service allow Bush to complete his elementary school visit, apparently unconcerned about his safety or that of the schoolchildren?
    4. Why hasn’t a single person been fired, penalized, or reprimanded for the gross incompetence we witnessed that day?
    5. Why haven’t authorities in the U.S. and abroad published the results of multiple investigations into trading that strongly suggested foreknowledge of specific details of the 9/11 attacks, resulting in tens of millions of dollars of traceable gains?
    6. Why has Sibel Edmonds, a former FBI translator who claims to have knowledge of advance warnings, been publicly silenced with a gag order requested by Attorney General Ashcroft and granted by a Bush-appointed judge?
    7. How could Flight 77, which reportedly hit the Pentagon, have flown back towards Washington D.C. for 40 minutes without being detected by the FAA’s radar or the even superior radar possessed by the US military?
    8. How were the FBI and CIA able to release the names and photos of the alleged hijackers within hours, as well as to visit houses, restaurants, and flight schools they were known to frequent?
    9. What happened to the over 20 documented warnings given our government by 14 foreign intelligence agencies or heads of state?
    10. Why did the Bush administration cover up the fact that the head of the Pakistani intelligence agency was in Washington the week of 9/11 and reportedly had $100,000 wired to Mohamed Atta, considered the ringleader of the hijackers?
    11. Why did the 911 Commission fail to address most of the questions posed by the families of the victims, in addition to almost all of the questions posed here?
    12. Why was Philip Zelikow chosen to be the Executive Director of the ostensibly independent 911 Commission although he had co-authored a book with Condoleezza Rice?
Those who are demanding deeper inquiry now number in the hundreds of thousands, including a former member of the first Bush administration, a retired Air Force colonel, a European parliamentarian, families of the victims, highly respected authors, investigative journalists, peace and justice leaders, former Pentagon staff, and the National Green Party.
As Americans of conscience, we ask for four things:
    1. An immediate investigation by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer
    2. Immediate investigation in Congressional Hearings.
    3. Media attention to scrutinize and investigate the evidence.
    4. The formation of a truly independent citizens-based inquiry.
Given the importance of the coming election, we feel it is imperative that these questions be addressed publicly, honestly, and rigorously so that Americans may exercise their democratic rights with full awareness.
In closing, we pray and hope for the strength to approach this subject with wisdom and compassion so that we may heal from the wounds inflicted on that terrible day.

….it is demeaning and ignorant to persistently call someone a “conspiracy theorist” while refusing to address thier arguments. Until you can start answering some questions, and intelligently rebutting thier points, than you have absolutely no basis by which to call them “conspiracy theorists”.
And you are correct, this administration IS NOT competent enough to pull this off. That is why people like yourself need to pull your head out of your ass and admit that they left some very glaring loose ends, and did not dot all thier i’s.. Sybil Edmonds’ and William Rodriquez’ experiences demonstrate my point peerfectly. These are glaring holes in the official story, but only two glaring holes in many that exist. I frankly don’t give a shit whether you drink the Kool-Aid or not, but stop choosing to demean ME because of YOUR un-informed and naive conclusions.

I happen to be an ER nurse so sorry but I am a pretty good critical thinker.
    Johnny,
Bin laden speaks Arabic so their language is very flowery and poetic and I’m sure the translation suffers. So let me translate the English version in synopsis:
    He’s talking about Sept 11th
He says Bush is lying about the reasons behind Sept 11th
He tells us he is going to share how the decision was made to attack the towers and then he tells the backstory of how the idea first came into his head
So no, he didn’t say “I did it” in those exact words. He’s not American, so he doesn’t speak that way.
However, in another earlier video he spoke about the attacks and said, “I was the most optimistic of us all”(regarding the assessment by his group of the damage that would be done to the towers) He also mentioned how it exceeded his expectations.
What I don’t get is, how could he have expected something that was carried out by the government, or was it aliens???

    Right?
To be sure, I am looking an `unequivocal statement from either UBL or Al-Zawahiri’ in which credit/responsibility is taken for the 9/11 attacks.
It is a shame that Bergen also does not adduce UBL’s or Al-Zawahiri’s direct wording in which credit/responsibility for the 9/11 attacks is taken.
How can this HUGE gap in the historical record exist?
David: Don’t you think that it serves their ends better if they deliberately remain vague about it?
You think UBL and Al-Zawahiri are deliberately remaining vague about the most horrific terrorist attack on US soil ?
What other specific terrorist groups have actually and deliberately remained vague or silent about the great success of their major attacks?
Hamas, Hezbollah, Palestine Islamic Jihad, PLO, et al are usually not vague or silent.
    Sometimes several groups take credit/responsibility.

    1) Large Turnout Reported For 1st Iraqi Vote Since ’58 The Washington Post, June 21, 1980
In another development today, Al Dawa, a clandestine Iraqi fundamentalist Moslem organization, claimed responsibility for yesterday’s grenade attack on the British Embassy here in which three gunmen reportedly were killed.
An Al Dawa spokesman told Agence France-Presse by phone that the attack was a “punitive operation against a center of British and American plotters.”

Since Steve’s post concerned Bergen… so I’d suggest reading Bergen’s book “The Osama bin Laden I Know” for some revealing insights into bin Laden’s life and influences from literally dozens of individuals who knew him. After reading the book, it’s clear that bin Laden was intimately involved and aware of the 911 plans. The things that drove him had to do primarily reasons of faith, at least his radical and twisted interpretation of it, and the American presence in the Saudi Arabia. With regard to an unequivocal statement from either him or Al-Zawahiri about their involvement, don’t you think that it serves their ends better if they deliberately remain vague about it?
Regarding many (not all) of the accusations of inexplicable or impossible coincidences or occurrences, try reading “Debunking 9/11 Myths: Why Conspiracy Theories Can’t Stand Up To The Facts”. Ah yes… but that book is a shill actually put out by the conspirators. Oh well.
There’s plenty of room for misunderstandings, misinterpretations and all the rest in an event of this magnitude that one can perceive as either a conspiracy or otherwise. For me though, the overriding factor is that bin Laden had the reason to do it and marshaled the resources to pull it off when the US intelligence wasn’t on its toes.

NEW YORK — I hear Osama bin Laden laughing. I heard him all day on Sunday and Monday as the mass murder of Sept. 11, 2001, was memorialized at the Pentagon and in that field in Pennsylvania and especially here, where the most people died and where countless cameras recorded it all for posterity and an abiding, everlasting anger. He laughs, the madman does, whenever George Bush says, as he has over and over, that America is “winning this war on terror.” Bin Laden knows better. He has already won.

karenk, OBL’s statement, as quoted by you, doesn’t conclusively say “I did it.” Nor does the “conspiracy theory” advanced by some say he wasn’t complicit. Mohammad Atta slept in a hotel about five miles from where I am sitting at this moment.
The whole f’ing point is there are unexplained questions that are unresolved. There was a concerted effort, successful to this day, to hide information. Some of us would like that information to be brought forward, even if it takes down this government.
I would personally hate the embassarassment of believing a conspiracy theory that is later conclusively proven false. But one can pick one’s own battles, and on this one there are sufficient reasons to think we have an incomplete picture of what happen that day.

“But I am amazed at you. Even though we are in the fourth year after the events of September 11th, Bush is still engaged in distortion, deception and hiding from you the real causes. And thus, the reasons are still there for a repeat of what occurred.
So I shall talk to you about the story behind those events and shall tell you truthfully about the moments in which the decision was taken, for you to consider.
I say to you, Allah knows that it had never occurred to us to strike the towers. But after it became unbearable and we witnessed the oppression and tyranny of the American/Israeli coalition against our people in Palestine and Lebanon, it came to my mind.
The events that affected my soul in a direct way started in 1982 when America permitted the Israelis to invade Lebanon and the American Sixth Fleet helped them in that. This bombardment began and many were killed and injured and others were terrorised and displaced.
I couldn’t forget those moving scenes, blood and severed limbs, women and children sprawled everywhere. Houses destroyed along with their occupants and high rises demolished over their residents, rockets raining down on our home without mercy.
The situation was like a crocodile meeting a helpless child, powerless except for his screams. Does the crocodile understand a conversation that doesn’t include a weapon? And the whole world saw and heard but it didn’t respond.
In those difficult moments many hard-to-describe ideas bubbled in my soul, but in the end they produced an intense feeling of rejection of tyranny, and gave birth to a strong resolve to punish the oppressors.
And as I looked at those demolished towers in Lebanon, it entered my mind that we should punish the oppressor in kind and that we should destroy towers in America in order that they taste some of what we tasted and so that they be deterred from killing our women and children.”

God bless Peter and all the journalists who go to these unstable places to get information so that we, comfy at home, can know what’s really going on. Pray for them…

    Hmmm….
    Not sure about OBL.
OBL is probably pissed as a Sunni.
Why would he be laughing his head off at the Persianization of the Gulf?
Sunni power throughout the ME has been greatly diminished by Cheney and Rumsfeld’s ***inadvertent*** fathering of a burgeoning Shiite fundamentalist republic in Iraq.
Either way, the US is fuct in the ME though.
Any radical Sunni would gladly lop the head off of an American instead of a Shiite and vice versa.

    Denying the obvious?
    1) Learn to read. (Apologies if Eng is your 2nd language)
    2) I am not denying anything.
    3) I am in really clear and simple language asking to read the wording of UBL and/or Al-Zawahiri when they **directly** and **explicitly** claimed credit for the attacks.
Please, make what is not obvious to me obvious.
Please, bring forth the article which features and probably should have headlined the wording of UBL and/or Al-Zawahiri when they claimed credit for the attacks of 9/11.
I am looking forward to your response.
I have never read such an account and I would highly appreciate if you could shed light on this, especially since it is so obvious.

Steve Clemons: Johnny — OBL and al Qaeda recently released a documentary tape of bin Laden meeting the chief planners of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. They and he are proud of their terrorism.
Thank you, I am aware of that.
But that is not at all what I am asking for.
From an Arabist ideally, I’d like to know specifically when and how UBL *directly* and *explicity* in no uncertain terms took responsibilty for the horrific attacks of 9/11.
There is not a single front page newspaper article whose byline features the exact words of UBL claiming credit for the horrific attacks of 9/11??
I’ve read that Al-Zawahiri claimed credit. That article, however, directly conveyed wording that was NOT claiming credit but was only describing the great effects of the attacks.
What >>historically valuable<< words did UBL or Al-Zawahiri use in taking credit?
Their exact words, a huge piece of history, have not been published?
    How can this be?
One would reasonably think if UBL or Al-Zawahiri directly and explicitly stated that Al Qaeda did in fact say such a thing there words would be widely available and on the tips of milions of peoples’ tongues.

Hey, Mark Karr accepted responsibility for killing JB Ramsey. Indeed, he has knowledge of details of the case which had never been aired publicly. His guilt is as certain as Osama’s.
Seriously, what is the best available proof that Al Qaeda was solely responsible for 9/11?
These 5 years later, what is the best accounting for the “5 dancing Israelis”, and what is the best explanation for the treatment of the hundreds of Israelis who were detained after 9/11.. not to mention the treatment of the Bin Laden family members in the US?
I’m not making accusations—I’m just asking questions that I think a lot of people have.

Amazing how these tapes keep showing up whenever Monkey Boy screams “BOO!!!!”, isn’t it???
Almost as amazing as the caraff of Kool-aid that shows up on Steve’s desk, that Steve drinks, right on cue.
Well, for such a crime, you’de sure think the FBI would put Bin Laden on the “10 most wanted” list, wouldn’t ya?
BTW Steve, what do you think of the FACT that one of those named and so called hi-jackers that Bin Laden is supposedly meeting on the tape was misnamed, and the actual Muslim that was named is alive and well and had nothing to do with 9/11? You seen a revised list??? Why not?? Kinda pokes holes in your pitcher of Kool-Aid, doesn’t it? And hey, if we accept your logic, the fact that a number of the hijackers are known to have been aboard one of Abramoff’s party boats must mean that Abromoff mastermninded 9/11, eh?
C’mon, Steve. Why in God’s name can someone with your intelligence fail to see that this whole God damned thing is a charade, from A to Z. Don’t you ar least WONDER why Sybil Edmonds has gone through what she has gone through??? Don’t you at least WONDER what caused William Rodriquiz’ injuries, and the injuries of those he pulled out of the basement? Don’t you at least WONDER why these bastards did everything in their power to block thorough investigations into 9/11??? Don’t you at least WONDER why we are being deluded with the propaganda bullshit like this “Path to 9/11” fantasy?
Wake up and smell the bodies, Steve.

As of today, I have never read or even heard of a statement by UBL which says that Al Qaeda did in fact attack the USA on 9/11.
There was suppose to be a white paper detailing this but that never came out.

it’s amazing that there are still so many people making this argument and denying the obvious.
i just listened to andrew kohut on npr detailing pew center polling data which demonstrates that a majority of people in jordon, egypt, saidi arabia and syria do not belive that arabs were involved in the attacks.
i guess the “neocons” aren’t the only ones in denial.

The September 11 issue of the New Yorker has a couple of articles on the Middle East that I was wondering if you could comment on. Particularly the Lawrence Wright article on the new theories of jihad and the 20 year plan for jihad (http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060911fa_fact3).
If the article is accurate, it seems that the U.S. is doing exactly what the Islamists want us to do.
